Counseling is a process in which a Counselor who is a highly trained and skilled professional; uses different Counseling approaches to help the clients make their way out through stressful situations and resolve their personal, social, emotional, or professional difficulties. A counselor empowers you to make your choices, set your goals, and assists and guides you to achieve those goals.
As is a general perception, Counselling is not advising or telling someone what they are doing is right or wrong. There is a marked difference between a qualified Counselor and a person who uses some Counseling skills as a part of their role.
Both Counseling and Psychotherapy are humanistic and person-centered approaches directed towards enabling people to come to terms with or work out solutions to their problems, but they are not exactly the same.
Counseling focuses on your emotional and intellectual experience of your problems.
Psychotherapy is a psychodynamic approach that explores the origins of various aspects of your personality by filtering through your past experiences and analyzing how they are affecting your current problem. A psychotherapist makes you conscious of the experiences you were previously unaware of. A psychotherapist has expertise in mental health assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, and facilitating behavior change.
The Counsellor/Therapist will make you comfortable and build a rapport with you. He / She will listen to you empathetically without any judgements and will help you to analyze your present thoughts and actions and your past experiences. You will choose your goals and outcomes for the therapy and the therapist will guide you through self reflection so that you become aware of the need for change. If need be the therapist will conduct psychological tests for better assessment of the situation. In cases where medication is necessary, you will be guided to a psychiatrist.
All people can benefit from Counselling & Psychotherapy. Lack of awareness about what these processes are and the stigma that surrounds issues of mental health makes people hesitant about giving Counseling & Psychotherapy a try. A general belief in society is that issues like anxiety, stress, anger issues, depression, and the like, can be treated best by medication. Hence, popping pills becomes the go-to treatment. Counselling & Psychotherapy is the recommended first line of approach to effect behavior change and treat mental health issues.
Neuroimaging studies in Psychotherapy research conducted on individuals undergoing psychotherapy reveal an increase in brain connectivity — between the prefrontal cortex, cerebellum, and the striatum indicating, improved communication between these areas of the brain. These areas of your brain are concerned with emotional regulation, social-relational abilities, and dopamine function.
Counselling and Psychotherapy do not offer quick fixes. These are sensitive approaches and are dependent on the issues being addressed. The relationship between the therapist and the client is a crucial factor in the success of the of the therapy. It definitely takes more than a couple of sessions to reach the desired outcomes.
